Problematic access to healthcare facilities
The Eastern peninsula coastal settlements are nestled between steep mountains falling sharply into the sea. Proliferated by a series of natural waterways, these townships, bounded by difficult terrain they are at the mercy of heavy rains, mudslides and inaccessible road systems. This makes accessing such communities both challenging and limiting.
Binta is a petty trader and mother of six. Since an operation last year - when she had to have one of her legs amputated - she finds great difficulty walking on the rocky, steep & slippery paths in the settlement, this worsens greatly during the rainy season, when she cannot walk unaided to get to and from home safely. She trained as a Traditional Birth Attendant (TBA) and she used to go to other communities to help pregnant women when needed before her operation. She also struggles to access the local health centre using the crutches and prosthetic she bought privately. The health centre she usually goes to is outside of the settlement up the steep mountains 300m above her densely built sea-level compound inaccessible to large vehicles.
